Earlier this year, Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) selected DTP Group as their partner of choice to provide IT infrastructure services with the design of a storage refresh based on HP 3PAR storage products.
LJMU has a community of over 21,000 students and conducts world-class research in the heart of Liverpool. Technology has been steadily introduced to automate business processes and enhance the student experience but the modern approach brought about new infrastructure challenges, particularly for the ageing storage platform housed within the universities data centres.
As part of the project, the University also wanted to move away from reacting to performance and capacity issues and instead take a more proactive approach in order to ensure maximum uptime and availability.
Mark Wynne, Assistant Director of IT at LJMU explained,
“Our storage needs were growing particularly fast and delivering an unacceptable user experience. Adding storage capacity to the legacy platforms would have been inefficient and wouldn’t scale over time.”
DTP deployed future-proof HP 3PAR 7400 storage including Application Software Suite for VMware at both data centres. “We recognised the technical advantages of the 3PAR platform and appreciated the native functionality for achieving online data migration in an efficient, streamlined and semi-automated manner.” explained Wynne.
LJMU also selected to add a five year HP Proactive Care Advanced Service plan to the project, combining technical support with smart technology to boost performance.
The service enables organisations to maximise the return from storage investments, implement best practices, maintain peak performance and control operational costs. It also gives LJMU access to 24×7 proactive monitoring, consultation expertise from storage specialists who understand the infrastructure and reporting for prompt problem resolution.
“Proactive Care Advanced Service provides us with regular insight into our performance and maintenance requirements. We’re even alerted when firmware updates need to be deployed which not only saves our staff members time, it also allows us to ensure top performance and optimise the use of storage resources.”
The HPE Proactive Care Advanced Service helps to ensure that the storage infrastructure remains stable and reliable. If performance declines, the University is notified and recommendations are made to make adjustments to storage tiers.
