As more organisations set out to become more sustainable, they look to better their practices, and minimise their impact on the planet. The technology industry emits 2-3% of global carbon emissions. Printing contributes a significant share of these emissions, presenting a strategic opportunity for organisations to make positive changes.
With sustainability first becoming a corporate objective for HP in 1957, it’s no surprise that they’re at the forefront of efforts to make printing more environmentally friendly. And just this month, independent research organisation Quocirca identified HP as the clear sustainable leader of the print industry.
One of the key principles HP has implemented into its manufacturing, is the use of recycled materials, and the reuse and remanufacturing of old components. This practice enables a circular product lifespan, reducing the demand for raw materials and new plastics entering the manufacturing cycle. In 2021, HP recycled 764,800 tonnes of hardware and supplies, with 92% of the products and materials taken back being reused or recycled.
As well as advocating the re-use of its own products and materials, HP’s focus on the use of recycled materials has substantially reduced the global impact of plastics. Since 2016, HP has used 1,298 tonnes of ocean bound plastics in its products, this is the equivalent to more than 102 million 500ml plastic bottles.
Extending product lifespans through repair is a further approach of the circular model. Throughout 2021, 6.29 million units of hardware were repaired, and 2.15 million units were repurposed or reused. Preventing tens of thousands of tonnes of hardware to reach landfill.
The use of paper presents a further resource concern. Since 2020, all HP-brand paper, and paper-based packaging has been derived from recycled sources. In addition, in 2021 HP pledged $80 million to WWF to address the impacts on forests from paper used in printing.
HP has set out to future-proof its operations by establishing definitive sustainability targets. It plans to use 100% renewable energy and reach net-zero waste by 2025. Other targets to be achieved by 2025 include eliminating 75% of single use plastic; reducing water withdrawal by 35%; using 30% of post-consumer material in its products; and recycling 1.2 million tonnes of hardware and supplies (from the beginning of 2016).
HP offers an array of services that empower customers, allowing them to monitor and reduce their own impact on the environment. HP managed print services can reduce GHG emissions by 12%, while increasing resource efficiency by 13%, significantly reducing the impacts of laser printing. Programs such as HP Planet Partners allow customers to recycle their printing supplies, while receiving custom reports on the positive results of their efforts. While the Forest First feature included with HP+ combats deforestation by making an environmental investment for each page printed, regardless of paper brand.
Countless manufacturers maintain that they’re sustainably responsible, while disregarding the impact of their partners and wider supply chain. Quocirca identified HP as leading in this space, having the only channel program built specifically for sustainability.
In 2021, HP launched the Amplify programme which is now available in 43 countries. The program provides partners with education, training, and assessments around sustainability, extending accountability throughout their supply chain.
In sharing HP’s vision for the planet, DTP have designed our own sustainability initiatives. Since 2019, DTP has sent 0% of waste to landfill, and as part of DTP Zero we aim to be carbon neutral by 2024. In acknowledgment of these efforts, DTP received a 4-star award from HP as part of the Amplify program.
In addition to our own impact, we support our customers on their own sustainability journeys. In partnership with HP’s certified carbon neutral Managed Print Service, DTP Zero Print offsets the entire carbon footprint of customer printer fleets.
Contributing a significant share of carbon emissions, creating demand on scarce resources, and generating substantial waste, printing is a key area that organisations should focus on in efforts to reduce their environmental impact.
HP guarantees the most environmentally friendly printing solutions on the market, empowering organisations to achieve their aims. On a product level, circular life cycles reduce the demand on raw materials and minimise waste, while ensuring that hardware and components continue to be utilised long after their initial intended use. End-users are offered a range of services and product features that allow them to reduce their own carbon footprint and waste. While HP’s own initiatives and targets provide piece of mind, assuring that their operations, supply chain and partners are operating sustainably.
