This year, HP was proudly recognised as one of the top 2% of the most sustainable companies globally¹. This badge of honour is a testament to years of dedicated effort and forward-thinking strategies aimed at creating a more sustainable and equitable future. In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at how HP got here, exploring its sustainability vision, key milestones, and the innovative steps that have propelled HP to the forefront of sustainable business practices.

HP’s Sustainability Vision

HP’s journey toward sustainability is deeply rooted in the company’s history and values. From its inception, HP’s founders instilled a philosophy that business should be a force for good. This belief has guided HP over the decades and remains at the heart of its mission today: to be the world’s most sustainable and just technology company.

In 2021, HP took a bold step by launching its most comprehensive Sustainable Impact agenda to date. This strategy, deeply informed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promised to embed sustainability into all aspects of HP’s operations. The agenda was created with input from an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) materiality assessment and active stakeholder engagement, ensuring it addressed the most pressing global challenges.

HP’s Three Pillars of Sustainable Impact

HP’s sustainability strategy is built on three core pillars: Climate Action, Human Rights, and Digital Equity.

  •

Climate Action: HP has set ambitious goals to combat climate change, including achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. HP is working on energy-efficient programs, promoting circular design, and increasing the use of renewable materials in its products.

  •

Human Rights: HP is committed to protecting and promoting human rights across its supply chain. This includes implementing worker awareness programs and rigorous social and environmental monitoring to ensure fair and safe working conditions.

  •

Digital Equity: HP is focused on bridging the digital divide through initiatives like the Digital Equity Accelerator and HP LIFE courses, which are designed to provide education and opportunities to underserved communities.

Key Highlights from 2023

2023 was a landmark year for HP’s sustainability efforts. The company achieved a 27% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to its 2019 levels, bringing HP closer to its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. This progress reflected HP’s broader commitment to leading the tech industry in climate action.

Moreover, HP made significant strides in the circular economy, incorporating over 1 billion pounds of recycled materials into its products and packaging. This milestone highlights a crucial step toward reducing waste and conserving resources on a large scale.

HP also made waves in the area of digital equity, reaching over 45 million people through various initiatives. These efforts are aimed at bridging the digital divide, particularly in marginalised communities, ensuring that more people have access to the tools and opportunities needed to thrive in a digital world.

Innovating for Sustainability

Innovation is at the heart of HP’s sustainability efforts. HP is continuously pushing the boundaries of product design to ensure that its products are both high-performing and environmentally friendly, proving that sustainability and high performance can go hand in hand.

HP’s Recognitions and Awards

In 2023, HP’s commitment to sustainability was widely acknowledged with a range of prestigious awards. For instance, HP was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and earned a Platinum rating from EcoVadis, placing it among the top 1% of companies assessed. HP was also recognised as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere and received an A-List rating from CDP for its efforts in climate and water stewardship.

While this isn’t an exhaustive list, it shows a small snapshot of the recognition HP received last year, highlighting HP’s leadership in creating positive environmental and social impact.
