University of Derby computer equipment was going end of life and technical problems were creating an interrupted service. The decision was therefore made to replace these with reliable desktop computers. DTP Group was selected as the IT partner to deliver the new roll-out based on its response to the University’s tender, in which DTP was deemed to be best suited to the University’s needs.

Bespoke products with added value services


DTP Group configured the University of Derby’s devices to match specific requirements, which varied by department. For example, some of the laboratories’ devices were configured with specialist graphics cards.

The roll-out included 400 HP Monitors, 60 HP Z210 Workstations, 220 HP 8200 Convertible Mini Tower PCs and 44 HP All in One PCs. DTP also provided a range of pre-delivery and on-site services including asset tagging, PAT testing, delivery to site, removal of old PCs, installation and removal of empty packaging.

A reliable and cost effective solution

The equipment selected has power saving modes, which will reduce energy usage. Further cost-savings are also anticipated from the extended life cycle of the devices (five years instead of the three year cycle previously employed).

Becca de Ville, IT Technician at the University says “Now the computers just work. They are reliable so students can work on them as they should rather than having to frequently contact the IT helpdesk for support. As a result of the new computers we have seen a reduction in the number of calls logged with IT helpdesk which has freed up their time to do other things.”

Minimum disruption

DTP worked through the University’s summer holiday period to replace the devices across three of the University’s campuses. The roll-out was phased to allow the departments to remain operational, and the result was seamless.

Becca comments “DTP needed to ensure that the correct delivery was made to each campus at the right time as there were slight variations in the product configurations for different departments. Our on-site lead was brilliant. He just kept checking that what we decided was definitely what we wanted and kept in contact over the roll-out so if anything went amiss he knew about it and was already fixing it.”
