Hybrid Cloud

Unconsciously Hybrid; the realisation of running two distinct environments – Cloud and on-premise – but not really understanding why or how you got there.

What is the hybrid cloud?

A hybrid cloud is a mixed environment where applications are run by a combination of compute, storage and services. This model utilises a blended infrastructure: a public cloud service, a private cloud (often hosted on-premise), and increasingly an edge environment where IoT data is processed.

It’s not a new concept, but one we know has become more common for organisations of every size, in every industry. Since the explosion of public cloud adoption, the complexities of migrating workloads have left many organisations unintentionally in a hybrid state. Today, “cloud repatriation” is a growing trend, with factors such as cost realisation, control, security and compliance influencing organisations to migrate specific workloads back on-premise.

Opting for a hybrid cloud approach enables organisations to deploy specific workloads in the most cost effective and optimum performance environment. Sensitive data and mission critical applications can remain on-premise, while scale-out applications that need to meet evolving demands can be hosted in the cloud. A well-planned hybrid cloud strategy will achieve this, while maintaining control and visibility across all environments.

Transformation doesn’t happen overnight. But with the help of our partners at Hewlett Packard Enterprise, we can eliminate the bumps in the road on your Hybrid IT journey – bringing together the right expertise and support, financial flexibility and technology solutions to meet your most immediate challenges and unexpected demands.

The advantages of public cloud

Opting for a third-party cloud service provider such as AWS or Microsoft Azure offers undeniable benefits. These services deliver instant access to a seemingly infinite amount of storage and compute resources, without the burdens of maintenance or upfront investment.

Google
  • Advantages:
    • Scalability – effortlessly increase or decrease resources to meet changing demand.
    • Pay as You Go– infrastructure is hired on a consumption basis, removing the upfront investment of servers or devices
    • No Maintenance Burden – Servers are maintained, updated, and replaced by the provider which relieves the maintenance burden from IT teams, while removing the cost of maintenance
    • Accessibility – easily accessed from anywhere in the world, enabling seamless collaboration
  • Disadvantages:
    • Operational costs – while there is no upfront investment, you no longer own your infrastructure, therefore you must pay a recurring fee to continue hosting and accessing your data and applications
    • Price Increases – the more data you store and virtual machines you use, the more you pay. The price to use these resources is also at the discrepancy of the cloud provider, and can change at any time.
    • Downtime – public cloud outages are not uncommon and can result in unpredictable downtime for applications
    • Control & security – storing sensitive data with a third party provider could lead to a breach you have no control over

The advantages of private cloud

A private cloud is essentially a private network which is dedicated to your organisation. Private clouds are often hosted within an on-premise data centre, which enables employees to utilise data and applications within an environment which is secure and under your complete control.

  • Advantages:
    • Control – keeping data on-premise allows organisations to meet compliance requirements, maintain data sovereignty, and implement their own security and privacy protocols.
    • Security – sensitive data and business critical applications remain behind your dedicated firewall and security measures.
    • Lower operational costs – while the upfront investment is higher, your organisation will own the servers and devices, often resulting in lower operational costs over time.
    • Performance – on-premise infrastructure is dedicated to one organisation and can be architected for specific workloads and applications, enabling optimum performance
  • Disadvantages:
    • Less flexibility – opting for on-prem restricts and slows down scalability both up or down, making it harder and more expensive to meet changing demands
    • Maintenance burden – the maintenance and management responsibilities for both the hardware and software falls entirely on your organisation

The advantages of hybrid cloud

A purposeful hybrid cloud approach combines the unique benefits of public cloud services and on-premise infrastructure. With a well-planned approach, its possible to achieve a perfect balance that aligns the benefits of both options to the specific needs of your organisation.

Business critical workloads and sensitive data can remain on-premise, under your control and running at optimum performance. While, scale out applications can deployed in the cloud, enabling agility when facing changing demands.

  • Advantages:
    • Agile – the public cloud can be leveraged to scale resources scaled up or down to meet changing demand
    • Control & Security – control can be maintained over sensitive data and applications by keeping them on-premise in a private cloud
    • Cost efficient – costs can be optimised by deploying workloads in the most cost-effective environment, whether its on-premise or in the cloud
    • Reduced risk – by utilising multiple environments there is a reduced risk of downtime if there is a hardware failure, service outage or disruption
    • Optimum performance –workloads can be deployed into the environment that delivers optimum performance e.g., an application architected to be non-cloud native

  • Disadvantages:
    • Complexity – many organisations are already operating in both environments unintentionally, which means their approach lacks the required planning to maintain visibility and control over a complex multi-cloud environment.

hybrid cloud management

Hewlett Packard Enterprise have set out to solve the complexities of managing a hybrid cloud environment. HPE GreenLake delivers a unified management experience for hybrid environments though its intuitive management portal. By creating a layer on top of the various environments, GreenLake delivers a unified view, and control of all resources including on-premise and cloud, as well as providing key insights into usage, cost, performance and environmental impact.

With GreenLake, organisations can deploy a hybrid approach which leverages the benefits of public cloud, while minimising the risks and challenges relating to security, migration and performance.

Consumption-based Infrastructure on your terms

In the age of insight, Hybrid Cloud goes beyond the limitations of current Cloud options. It enables you to decentralise data and unite your business information to unlock digital transformation and amplify insights. With the ability to scale up or down at the click of a button, you can stand up new ideas without risk and view your environment in a single, agile system.

With DTP’s Hybrid Cloud solutions, IT leaders have complete control over their resources and can manage, report against and automate compliance for all workloads across the public, private and on-premises environment. Backed by an ecosystem of experienced vendors, DTP’s Hybrid Cloud solution is the safest place to be.

The public cloud wasn’t built to handle everything, but that’s ok.

Many organisations have found themselves in a state of ‘unconscious’ as an effect of the race to public cloud and adopting a one-size-fits-all methodology. After finding that Public Cloud on its own is not the answer, most organisations have found themselves needing to adopt a consciously hybrid approach to be successful.

Compute can exist anywhere and the need to become consciously hybrid is imperative. Learn more about Consciously Hybrid.
